Dudh Kunda, or “Milky Lake,” is a sacred lake nestled in the lap of Mt. Numbur in the Solukhumbu region of Nepal. This off-the-beaten-path trek, also known as the Lower Everest Trek, offers an immersive experience in nature and Sherpa culture. The trek requires camping and takes travelers through traditional Sherpa villages like Kaku, Basa, Taksindu, and Beni, providing insight into the local lifestyle.
Believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva, Dudh Kunda is a revered pilgrimage site for Hindus and Buddhists. Devotees believe that taking a dip in its holy waters cleanses sins and grants wishes, including blessing childless families with children. During the full moon in August, pilgrims and Shaman priests (Jhankris) hold a week-long celebration here.
The trek offers breathtaking views of Everest, Numbur, and the Himalayan range, along with lush forests of rhododendrons, pine trees, and diverse wildlife such as mountain Thars, leopards, jackals, and pheasants. Rhododendrons bloom vibrantly from March to May, adding to the trek’s beauty. The trail is remote and less crowded, making it perfect for nature lovers seeking solitude and serenity.
Beyond the natural splendor, the warm hospitality of the region’s ethnic groups—including Sherpas, Khaling Rais, Tamangs, Magars, and Gurungs—enriches the experience. Trekkers can enjoy authentic cultural interactions, local delicacies, and stunning landscapes. Dudh Kunda remains an untouched gem, offering both spiritual significance and an adventurous trekking experience in Nepal’s Solukhumbu region.
